Fishfinder Chartplotter

I want to buy a Gps / Fishfinder on my boat, but what is a plotter? Do I have to cross in front?

I intend to move my boat on a lake in PA. the Hudson River to extend my cruise. I want to take a cruise is intercostal waterway in the north and ended up taking my boat to Cape Cod and Nantucket, where I travel every year. Do I need a plotter or GPS is enough?

You do not need a plotter, but does not need graphics. GPS is good, but still needs graphics and navigation courses, tides and currents. Tides and currents in the Hudson in a direction along the East River and on the other. On the road TW Nantucket found GPS and compass our difference of 45 degrees. In fact, there was such a current, the compass indicating the direction of the boat was pointing and GPS displays the direction they move. Captain Eldridge Tide and current, updated annually, is very handy.
